The Used Motorcycle Checklist

This is a small checklist of things you should ask about or silently observe (in my opinion, always prefer the latter when possible) while checking out a used bike. It's a good starting point when looking at a used bike.

  • Service record
    • The first thing I ask for. Always a huge plus if they can provide it.
  • Title in hand?
    • If not you don't even want to go look at it.
  • Registration paid for?
    • If not, use this in negotiation
  • Get the VIN ASAP
    • Check history online. It's always worth the money to make sure it wasn't totalled.
    • If they are hesitant to provide the VIN, red flag!
  • Suspension
    • Do they know when the last time the fork oil was changed? Not bad if not, good info if they know. Should be able to make a judgement based on observations listed below later.
    • Make sure no leaking or rust on tubes
    • Rub finger on inner tube looking for oil and creases indicating a bend
    • Wipe the tubes clean before test ride, if more oil appears there is probably a leak
    • Is the suspension adjustable?
      • Just something to keep in mind about the model itself, can be cool if it is!
    • Shove the front down and make sure there is no sound and that it returns smoothly
  • Brakes and pads
    • Roll forward while walking the bike and use front brakes to check engagement and for any abnormailities
  • Tires
    • How is the wear?
    • How old are the tires?
      • All tires have a date on the side, too old and you'll probably want to replace them soon. Make note and use in negotiation.
  • Coolant
    • When was the last time it was changed?
  • Clutch
    • Is it healthy? Take a few minutes to really focus on the clutch while riding the bike. If not this is a huge deal breaker...
  • Chain and sprocket
    • When is the last time they were changed?
    • When is the last time the chain was tuned?
    • Chain rusty? Will it need to be replaced soon?
    • Push the chain up while on the kickstand to feel the slack. Is the chain at least close to spec?
      • Too loose or way too tight is not good
  • Frame
    • Is there rust or damage on the steering stops? This may indicate crash
